SupDPO’s Digital Ethics WG was born out of the strong interest shared by the DPOs in highlighting the legal foundations of the RGPD, which is based on Article 8 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union (the RGPD being its regulatory version).
« The European Union is founded on the indivisible and universal values of human dignity, freedom, equality and solidarity; it is based on the principle of democracy and the rule of law. It places the individual at the heart of its action by establishing citizenship of the Union and by creating an area of freedom, security and justice.
Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union
The RGPD aims to defend a certain model of citizens’ rights regarding the management and use of their personal data.
In the Higher Education and Research, the RGPD is a tool for institutions: it allows to highlight and give ethical substance to the teaching and research policies implemented in the service of working communities: students, researchers and teacher-researchers, administrative staff.
It is therefore a matter of the Higher Education and Research – a real sounding board in the sense that it sees the different generations of students pass through, offers them a digital ecosystem and establishes the common rules for the proper use of its information systems and data – participating in the construction of this societal model.
The Digital Ethics WG aims to reveal the actions of DPOs and institutions in this field, but also the intense debates that this subject poses, giving rise to exciting scientific reflections.
